Two halves instead of four quarters

College basketball is played in games lasting two halves. 20 minutes each.

High school basketball is played in games lasting four quarters each lasting 8 minutes. Which means 16 means in a half.

Then, the pros play four quarters each lasting 12 minutes - or 24 minutes per half.

I can understand increasing the amount of time of the game between high school, college, and football but can anybody explain why college uses halves while the levels above and below use quarters?

I tried to find an answer but failed. While looking, though, I found out that Iowa lost the first ever intercollegiate 5 on 5 basketball game. How’s that for tradition?
