Early Season Rankings Suck

by talkhawkeye on September 29, 2009

The more seasons I watch the more I hate ranking that come out before the middle of October. Nobody can convince me that they can tell how good any teams are right now because we haven’t seen enough of the teams playing other good teams.

I also hate that at this point of the season you can handily beat a team on their own field, be undefeated, and be ranked behind them. Later in the season you can have more of a “body of work” to base stuff like that on but at this point of the season any undefeated team should be ranked ahead of any of the teams they beat (especially if they won the game on the road).

And this isn’t just me being an Iowa homer because I don’t really think anybody knows how good Iowa is at this point, either. I could see them being a top 10-20 team but I have a feeling that in a few weeks after Iowa has played their games against Arkansas State, Michigan and Wisconsin, we’ll have a good idea exactly how good they are going to be this year.

And if I’m not mistaken, that’s about when the first BCS poll will come out. Why not just wait and do them all at the same time?

it is too early to tell that, let’s give them another one or two weeks and see how will they perform.
