Terry Bowden thinks that Michigan was silly for scheduling the game against Appalachian State because, get this, Appalachian State is one of the good division-formerly-known-as 1AA teams.
Apparently it is okay for the big power house teams to schedule the games against the other division, but only against the really bad teams that are easy wins.
Extending that same logic, the teams that think they have a chance at winning the national championship should schedule all of their preconference games against the Buffalo and Middle Tennessee type of teams. Heaven forbid that you challenge your team with a decent game against a decent team. That couldn’t possibly help them come conference time. Heaven forbid that a good team gives a team like the 2 time division-formerly-known-as-1AA champions a chance to play one of the traditional big time schools.
We all know that one loss in the Bowl Subdivision means that you probably are not going to have a very good chance at playing for the BCS Championship. But that really is a flaw with the system. The correct fix for that is not to have good teams avoid playing other good teams when they don’t have to.
In fact, I believe the division-formerly-known-as-1AA has a really cool system that gives a whole bunch of the better teams a chance at their championship.
